Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

What is Rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disorder where the immune system attacks the lining of the joints causing inflammation, and painful swelling. Over time, this can damage the joints that can eventually result in the breakdown of bones and joint deformity. Painful swelling and stiffness making it harder to move. RA usually affects smaller joints, like those in the hands and feet, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the lungs, heart, blood vessels, skin, and eyes. People with RA may feel especially stiff in the morning or after resting. As RA progresses, symptoms can spread to the wrists, shoulders, elbows, ankles and hips. It is not uncommon for the symptoms to occur in the same joints on both sides of the body. A family history of RA increases the risk of developing the disease. Women are more likely to develop RA than men. RA most commonly begins in middle age.

Some treatments can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of joint damage. Doctors often prescribe medications like anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or corticosteroids, to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Another key treatment is disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), which help slow the progression of RA and prevent joint damage. However, medications, dietary changes, and treatments do not address the root cause of the disease.
