Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating surrounding the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. This coating, called myelin, helps nerves send signals properly. When the myelin is damaged, it can slow down or block the signals, leading to problems with movement and balance. People with MS might have symptoms like trouble walking, lack of coordination, double or blurred vision, slurred speech, cognitive problems, fatigue, muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling. MS affects everyone differently, with some people having mild symptoms and others experiencing more serious problems.
Some treatments can help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Doctors often prescribe disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) to help slow down the damage to the nerves and reduce the number of flare-ups and corticosteroids to reduce nerve inflammation. However, these treatments do not address the root cause of the disease.
