Lupus
What is Lupus?
Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system starts attacking the body’s healthy cells and tissues. Lupus causes inflammation, pain, and damage to different parts of the body including the skin, joints, kidneys, blood cells, brain, lungs, and even the heart. Common symptoms of lupus include feeling very tired, joint pain and swelling, skin lesions, shortness of breath, dry eyes, headaches, confusion, and memory loss. A distinctive sign of lupus can be a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly across both cheeks and the bridge of the nose. The symptoms can come and go, with some periods being worse than others, called "flare-ups.” Lupus is more common in women, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. Lupus is most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45 but affects people of all ages.
Doctors can help manage it with treatments that reduce inflammation, control the immune system, and relieve pain and may prescribe medications including anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants to help improve symptoms and to protect organs. However, medications and dietary changes do not address the root cause of the disease.
