Inflammatory Bowel Disease
What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune disorder where parts of the digestive tract become swollen and irritated, mostly in the stomach and intestines, which can cause abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and weight loss. There are two main types of IBD: Crohn’s disease, which can affect any part of the digestive system, and ulcerative colitis, which only affects the large intestine. People with IBD may also feel very tired and have trouble digesting food properly. IBS is commonly diagnosed in people under the age of 50 years old with an increased risk to females. A family history of IBS, having anxiety and depression, or other mental health issues may also be risk factors.
Some treatments involve dietary changes to help manage the symptoms and some Doctors may prescribe medications to reduce inflammation, control the immune system, or relieve pain. However, medications and dietary changes do not address the root cause of the disease.
